Trump Addresses 'Foolish' GOP
Spending Plan Amid Elon Musk's Criticism
Donald Trump has spoken out
regarding Republican Speaker Mike Johnson's extensive 1,600-page government
funding proposal.
He is urging GOP legislators to
abandon the agreement, claiming it favors Democrats, and to hold their ground
in anticipation of a potential government shutdown.
In a joint statement with
incoming VP J.D. Vance, the pair finally expressed their views on the speaker's
funding scheme after close ally Elon Musk launched a strong critique against
it.
Throughout Wednesday, Musk
mocked Johnson's continuing resolution (CR), a temporary funding measure aimed
at extending government operations until March. If funding is not approved by
Saturday, parts of the government may face a shutdown.
However, Trump reassured
Republicans about the situation.
"Republicans need to be
smart and tough," Trump's and Vance's statement declared. "If
Democrats threaten a government shutdown unless we concede to all their
demands, then call their bluff."
The Republican duo also
outlined their preferred approach for Johnson, making clear they desire a
"clean CR," which would exclude additional policy provisions such as
disaster relief, efforts to counter China’s growing influence, and salary increases
for Congress members included in the current draft.
"We should advance a
streamlined spending bill that doesn’t give Chuck Schumer and the Democrats
everything they desire," Trump and Vance emphasized.
Furthermore, the statement
highlighted an important stance by the incoming Republicans, insisting that
Congress should tackle the debt ceiling.
On January 1, 2025, the debt
ceiling will be reinstated after being paused by the Fiscal Responsibility Act
of 2023.
