Leadership Transition at Apple: Tim Cook to Step Down, John Ternus Named Successor:

Apple has announced a major leadership transition, with Tim Cook set to step down as CEO after more than a decade in the role. Cook, who has led the company since 2011 following Steve Jobs, will transition to the position of executive chairman effective September 1.

Taking over as CEO will be John Ternus, currently Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering. Alongside this change, Ternus will also join Apple’s board of directors. Meanwhile, Arthur Levinson, who has served as non-executive chairman for 15 years, will assume the role of lead independent director.

Cook’s tenure marks one of the most significant leadership periods in corporate history. He assumed control during a time of uncertainty, just weeks before Jobs passed away from pancreatic cancer, and successfully guided the company through a transformative era. Under his leadership, Apple evolved into a $4 trillion enterprise, with annual revenues increasing more than fourfold.

Reflecting on his journey, Cook described his time as CEO as the greatest privilege of his life, expressing deep appreciation for the company and its employees.

Cook originally joined Apple in 1998, recruited by Jobs to overhaul a struggling supply chain. With prior experience at IBM, Intelligent Electronics, and Compaq, he streamlined operations by reducing excess inventory and optimizing supplier networks—efforts that ultimately turned Apple’s manufacturing strategy into a core strength.

Although once seen as an unlikely successor to Jobs due to his operational background rather than product vision, Cook proved his leadership capabilities during multiple interim stints as CEO. By the time he officially took over in 2011, he had already demonstrated the stability and strategic discipline needed to lead one of the world’s most influential companies.
