Google Plans Up to $40B Investment in Anthropic, Expanding AI Compute Partnership:
Google is preparing to invest as much as $40 billion in Anthropic, combining direct funding with large-scale computing support, according to reports. The initial commitment includes $10 billion at a valuation of $350 billion, with an additional $30 billion contingent on Anthropic achieving specific performance milestones.
This move follows the limited release of Anthropic’s latest AI model, Mythos, which the company describes as its most advanced system yet, particularly in cybersecurity applications. Due to concerns around potential misuse, access to the model has been restricted to select partners, although it has already been reported to have circulated beyond approved channels. Running such advanced models at scale is also expected to require significant computational resources.
The competition in artificial intelligence is increasingly centered on securing the infrastructure needed to train and deploy models. Companies like OpenAI have been aggressively forming large-scale partnerships across cloud, chip manufacturing, and energy sectors to ensure access to this capacity.
Anthropic, meanwhile, has been rapidly expanding its own infrastructure partnerships. The company recently entered into an agreement with CoreWeave for additional data center resources and secured a further $5 billion investment from Amazon. As part of its broader strategy, Anthropic may spend up to $100 billion over time to secure around 5 gigawatts of compute power.
Despite being a competitor in AI model development, Google remains a key infrastructure partner for Anthropic. The company relies heavily on Google Cloud, including access to specialized tensor processing units (TPUs), which are designed specifically for AI workloads and serve as strong alternatives to widely used GPUs.
The partnership between Anthropic and Google has been evolving steadily. Recently, Anthropic also collaborated with Broadcom to gain access to large-scale TPU-based computing capacity starting in 2027. The latest investment further strengthens this relationship, with Google Cloud expected to provide an additional 5 gigawatts of compute capacity over the next five years, with potential for further expansion.
