Global Crackdown on DDoS Services: Europol Warns 75,000 Suspected Users:

A coalition of international law enforcement agencies, led by Europol, has taken action against widespread cybercrime by contacting over 75,000 individuals suspected of using services designed to launch distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks.

The operation, known as Operation PowerOFF, targeted so-called “DDoS-for-hire” platforms. These services enable users with little to no technical expertise to overwhelm websites with traffic, effectively knocking them offline without needing their own infrastructure.

As part of the crackdown, Europol sent warning emails and letters to individuals identified through data obtained during raids on these platforms. By seizing servers linked to the services, authorities were able to uncover user information and trace those who had registered or paid for the tools.

The enforcement effort led to four arrests, the shutdown of 53 domains, and the execution of 24 search warrants across multiple regions.

DDoS attacks continue to be a common and disruptive form of cyberattack, largely due to their accessibility through these for-hire services. Highlighting the scale of the threat, Cloudflare reported mitigating the largest recorded DDoS attack last year, which peaked at 29.7 terabits per second.

Agencies such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation have also been actively involved in similar efforts in recent years, aiming to dismantle the infrastructure that enables these attacks and deter potential users.
