Court Blocks Trump’s Order Limiting Birthright Citizenship
A federal judge in Seattle has issued a temporary restraining order (TRO) today, effectively halting the implementation of President Trump’s executive order that greatly restricted eligibility for birthright citizenship. Legal experts had largely anticipated this development, as the executive order seemingly conflicts with the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, which states, “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.” U.S. District Judge John Coughenour, who granted the TRO, remarked, “I cannot recall another case where the situation is as clear as it is in this instance. This is an overtly unconstitutional order.”
