Coronation Streets Sam Aston Emerges as Frontrunner for ITVs Dancing on Ice
The show, now in its 17th season, will premiere on Sunday, January 12, at 6:45 PM. Sam will compete alongside notable personalities such as Fearne McCann from TOWIE, Mollie Pearce from The Traitors, and Chelsee Heeley. Prior to the season opener, odds experts at Slotozilla conducted an analysis of data from past winners to identify the characteristics of successful contestants. This research, which spans 15 years, examined various factors including the contestant's profession, hometown, age, and gender.
The findings revealed that nearly 75% of previous winners were male. Additionally, contestants aged between 26 and 35 were found to have the highest likelihood of winning, with those hailing from Northwest regions like Manchester, Liverpool, and Yorkshire showing a strong track record of success. Taking these statistics into account, experts have determined that 31-year-old Sam Aston from Burnley is the most probable winner.
Best known for his portrayal of Chesney Brown on Coronation Street, Sam would not be the first soap star to win, following the 2024 champion and fellow Coronation Street actor, Ryan Thomas. In second place is comedian Josh Jones, who also meets three of the five key criteria and is 32 years old, fitting the winning age range.
Anton Ferdinand, Dan Edgar, and Chris Taylor rank third, each meeting only two of the four winning criteria, while Chelsee Healey is the only female contestant to earn more than one point in the rankings. Marie Toland, Senior Editor at Slotozilla, commented on the findings, stating that Dancing on Ice is a beloved staple of British television and a highly anticipated show that brings excitement to the New Year.
Based on an analysis of historical data regarding previous winners, it appears that Sam Aston has a significant chance of emerging victorious, contingent upon his performance on the ice. His partner for the competition is Molly Beth Lanaghan. This comes in light of a major restructuring of the show aimed at minimizing stress for the contestants.
According to reports from The Sun, ITV executives have modified the dance-off format, eliminating the requirement for celebrities to perform a new routine if they find themselves in the bottom two. Previously, contestants not only had to master a weekly performance but also prepare an additional dance for the potential skate-off.
Now, it is understood that the contestants will only need to rehearse their original performance from the main competition, as the welfare of the participants is deemed a top priority by ITV management. A source shared with the publication: "In previous seasons of Dancing on Ice, all couples were required to prepare a unique skate-off routine in case they ended up in the bottom two."
