The aircraft will utilize advanced lightweight, high-strength composite materials, engineered to endure extreme aerodynamic heating while flying at Mach 4. In contrast to conventional aircraft that accelerate horizontally for takeoff, Yunxing will execute vertical takeoffs and landings, enabling it to operate in more confined spaces.

 

 This capability allows it to bypass traditional runways at current airports, potentially facilitating operations from smaller, urban airfields. Yunxing is emerging as a formidable competitor to NASA in the quest to transport paying passengers on a supersonic jet for the first time since the era of Concorde. After much anticipation, NASA introduced its supersonic X-59 aircraft, informally referred to as 'Son of Concorde', in January. Created for NASA by Lockheed Martin, the $247.5 million X-59 is designed to cruise at 937 miles per hour—exceeding the speed of sound, yet significantly slower than Mach 4.
